Spotting Drills

Solid carbide Spotting Drills provide rigid, repeatable starts and accurate hole location on CNC mills and lathes. They limit wander, protect downstream drills and taps, and form clean chamfers. Ground to sub‑micron accuracy, these tools center reliably in aluminum, steels, stainless steels, cast iron, and difficult alloys.

Key Benefits

  • Short, rigid bodies for clean entry and predictable engagement

  • Controlled point angles for reliable guidance and low chatter

  • Material‑specific edge prep for fast, burr‑free spotting in aluminum and tough steels

  • Optimized relief and rake to reduce cutting forces

  • Tight shank and diameter tolerances to minimize runout, improve finish, and extend tool life

Precision Geometry

  • Sub‑micron grinding yields true concentricity and sharp, stable edges that hold position on entry

  • Controlled runout: shank tolerances support repeatable clamping in precision collets

Specifications and Options

  • Sizes: metric and inch diameters covering small features and larger chamfers

  • Point angles: 90°, 120°, 140°; match the downstream drill or tap for best guidance

  • Lengths: short overall lengths maximize stiffness; extended options provide reach when fixtures require clearance

  • Flutes: short flutes for stiffness and positive chip flow at the spot

  • Coatings and edge prep: choose by workpiece and cycle goals—sharper edges for aluminum and nonferrous; reinforced edges for stainless and alloy steels

Applications and Materials

Use these tools to start holes, break a chamfer, and establish a center point before drilling, reaming, or tapping. They enhance accuracy in aluminum, mild and alloy steels, stainless steels, cast iron, and high‑temperature alloys while helping prevent burrs and wander.

Manufacturing and Quality

Produced in our Changzhou facility on advanced CNC grinders: TTB Micro Grinding Center, WALTER HELITRONIC, DECKEL, and ANCA. Thermal stability and rigid fixturing support repeatable sub‑micron geometry. Dimensions and edge forms are verified on ZOLLER measuring and presetting systems and PARLEC PG1000 video measuring. ISO9001 (2023–2026) and SGS certifications support consistent quality management.

Custom Non‑Standard Tools

We design spot drills with non‑standard point angles, step or combined chamfer forms, material‑specific edge prep, and tailored length or shank configurations. Toolholding and Selection Guide

  • Use high‑precision collet chucks to control runout and improve location on VMCs, HMCs, and turning centers

  • Choose the shortest usable length for maximum stiffness and minimal deflection

  • Match the angle to the following drill or tap

  • Pick edge prep and coating by material: polished, sharp edges for aluminum; reinforced edges and suitable PVD coating for stainless and alloy steels; relief tuned for balanced forces and durability

Notes

Spot drills are intended for starting and chamfering only. They are not designed for deep drilling.
