Geometry and Helix Design


Optimized helix angles and polished cutting edges reduce friction, speed chip flow, and help control burrs. A typical 45°–55° helix lowers cutting forces and lifts chips rapidly. Edge preparation options—square, corner radius, or chamfer—protect corners at high feed rates and RPM, matching aluminum’s ductility to extend tool life. Deep, polished gashes with tuned rake/relief minimize recutting, stabilize finishing passes, and cut deburring steps.


Coatings and Carbide Grade


Select uncoated tools for clean, soft grades, or apply ZrN, TiB2, or DLC to counter adhesive wear in silicon‑rich and recycled alloys. Sub‑micrograin carbide maintains edge toughness and resists micro‑fracture at high RPM. ZrN reduces adhesion; TiB2 excels in abrasive, high‑Si aluminum; DLC offers ultra‑low friction for sticky chips and thin‑wall parts.


Flute Count Options


Balance chip load, finish, and stability with single‑edge, 2‑, 3‑, and 5‑flute variable‑index designs. Single‑edge and 2‑flute cutters provide large gullet volume for deep slotting and softer grades. A balanced 3‑flute layout supports higher feed per tooth and smooth sidewalls in 6000/7000 series alloys. 5‑flute variable index/helix designs reduce chatter in thin sections and long overhangs while lowering scallop height.


Machining Parameters


Use appropriate speed, feed, coolant, and rigid setups to maximize the value of polished flutes and high‑helix designs. Typical cutting speeds range from 400 to 1,200 m/min by alloy and diameter, with feed per tooth of 0.02–0.12 mm and suitable DOC/WOC. Flood coolant or MQL helps limit built‑up edge and maintain chip evacuation in deep pockets. High‑precision collet systems with h6 shank fit minimize runout and protect edges at high RPM.
